Abstract

This paper analyses the notion of community of the eighteenth-century Accademia del’Arcadia that emanated from Italy to all of Europe, in relation to the cosmopolitism of the respublica litteraria. It surveys the ideological conditions that were essential for the movement to dwell in eighteenth-century Hungary. The presence of the Arcadian movement can only be attributed to Italian arcades who lived temporarily in the Kingdome of Hungary, but when they left the organisation has stopped. Then, by interpreting Latin and Hungarian verses, the paper shows that what mattered, was not the actual Arcadian membership, but the perception of the Arcadia as an academic society and asylum for the literati. Thus, the community identity of the Hungarian Arcadia can be outlined through the institutional drive of the respublica litteraria, the importance of the patronage system, language and culture, and the reverence for the cultural toil of the forerunners.
