Abstract

A projekt célja egy monográfia elkészítése volt. Herz Miksa pasa (1856-1919) magyar építész 1880 és 1914 között Egyiptomban működött műemlékvédőként és ő gondozta az arab-iszlám és kopt műemlékeket. A Kairói utca (Cairo Street) c. projektet az Amerika felfedezésének 400. évfordulója alkalmából 1893-ban Chicagóban rendezett világkiállításon ő tervezte, ill. felügyelte az összeállítását is a helyszínen. Egy tipikus kairói utcát épített föl, többnyire a valóságban is létező épületeknek, ill. azok elemeinek a másolataiból. Tárgyalom a világkiállítás megszületésének körülményeit és sajátosságait, ilymódon elhelyezve környezetében a projektet. Rekonstruálom a Kairói utcát, részletes leírását adva az egyes épületeknek, elemezve a mintául szolgáló eredeti épületekhez viszonyított eltéréseket. Vizsgálom, miképpen kapcsolódnak a projekt egyes elemei Herz Miksa műemlékvédői tevékenységéhez. Bemutatom a kapcsolódó eseményeket, korabeli reakciókat is. A monográfiát gazdag korabeli képanyag illusztrálja. | The aim of the project was the writing of a monograph. The Hungarian architect Max Herz Pasha (1856-1919) was active in the field of the conservation of Arab-Islamic and Coptic monuments in Egypt from 1880 until 1914. He designed and erected the Cairo Street project at the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago. He erected a typical street of Cairo by clever combination of copies of extant buildings or of their elements. The monograph examines the main characteristics of the Fair with the aim of providing a setting for the project within the context of the fair. A detailed description of the buildings in Cairo Street is offered, with special attention to the relationship between the copies and their models. The project's relationship to Herz Pasha's conservation activities is examined, along with accompanying events and contemporary attitudes towards the project. The monograph is illustrated by a rich collection of contemporary photographs and drawings.
