Abstract

Public space reallocation projects transform urban areas to enhance liveability, mobility and sustainability. This study examines key policy drivers through European examples and a case study in Budapest, Hungary. Findings show that reallocation improved walkability, boosted business activity and revitalised public spaces. While property prices in the transformed streets rose considerably, they followed broader trends. Beyond presenting a novel approach and actionable evidence for policymakers, we explore why some cities embrace reallocation projects while others remain hesitant, highlighting financial, political and governance challenges.
