Abstract
My study presents the critical turning points in the career of Austro-Hungarian Chief of Staff Field Marshal Franz Conrad von Hötzendorf, focusing on the events of the summer of 1916. By that stage of the war, the Dual Monarchy was undoubtedly on the verge of ultimate defeat. Although Conrad achieved initial successes in the socalled “Punitive Expedition” in May 1916, he was forced to halt the offensive when the Russians launched the Brusilov Offensive on June 4th. In this gruelling campaign, the Monarchy lost more than 600 thousand soldiers. In August, the Italians once again attacked along the Isonzo River. Over the course of the Sixth Battle of the Isonzo, they narrowly broke through the frontline. The crisis culminated in late August when Romania entered the war by attacking Transylvania. Conrad’s reputation consequently suffered irreparable damage, and the Germans took command of the troops of the Central Powers on the Eastern Front. Conrad’s fiascos ultimately led to his dismissal as Chief of Staff in February 1917.
