Abstract

Fragments of the Libraries of Vencel Entshelyi and Casparus Wagner in the Ghyczy Collection Ignác Ghyczy (1799–1870), book collector and Member of Parliament, assembled a highly diverse collection of books and periodicals from the 18th and 19th centuries. His children donated this collection to the Library of the House of Representatives in 1872. The volume discussed in this study not only reflects Ghyczy’s extensive knowledge of the ancient classics but also reveals that the Ghyczy Collection preserves previously unidentified library fragments dating back to the 16th century, which may shed new light on questions of early modern cultural history. The main work of Valerius Maximus, Dictorum factorumque memorabilium libri novem, is a rhetorical anthology compiled from a variety of sources and long used as a handbook in schools of rhetoric. According to the ownership inscriptions, the earliest known possessor of the copy preserved in the Ghyczy Collection of the Library of the Hungarian Parliament was probably Casparus Wagner (?–1599?), a peregrinus from Wittenberg. Wagner inscribed copies of this work found in various libraries with dedications to different recipients, revealing a previously little-known network of contacts. A later owner of the volume, Vencel Entshelyi, was a monk of the dissolved Pauline Order and a teacher of theology at the grammar school in Győr, which was affiliated with the Royal Academy of Law. Teachers such as Entshelyi presumably enriched the institution’s library with books from their own collections. The volume must have been an important source for both Wagner and Entshelyi during their ecclesiastical studies. Ignác Ghyczy may have used this edition of Valerius Maximus as a textbook during his philosophical studies. He attended the Royal Academy of Law in Győr between 1812 and 1815, where he likely acquired the book – although it may also have come from a close relative, as several members of the Ghyczy family studied there.
