Abstract

This volume is the first comprehensive attempt at understanding the role and significance of the Croatian-Hungarian light cavalry units in the Army of Flanders, making a meaningful step forward in basic research by exploring hitherto unknown archival sources from Austria, Belgium, Spain, France and the Czech Republic. The results will help to interpret the value and strategic importance of the Kingdom of Hungary’s manpower and military resources in the European market and battlefield in the perspective of the Atlantic and Mediterranean empires in a broader, global context. The published sources and their background fit both logi cally and historically in an organic and harmonious way into the picture that international, and more recently Hungarian historiography has developed about the Spanish Monarchy’s strategically most important European land army and of the international manoeuvring space of the Habsburg Monarchy in Central Europe. Furthermore, the financial, military and political dependencies of the latter on the Spanish branch in the first half of the 17th century.
