Abstract
The Pelješac Bridge, which opened in July 2022, is the new gem of Croatia. The construction was a nationwide Croatian project to unite the southern regions and Dubrovnik with the „motherland” after hundred of years. As the official Croatian narrative shows the Pelješac Bridge is more than a simple object with a transportation geographical function. The case of Pelješac Bridge represents a crucial and a spectacular geopolitical analogy and it demostrates several unsolved issues between Republic of Croatia and Bosna and Herzegovina. Beyond the direct economic impacts the underlying political and geopolitical processes are much more significant in this particular situation. First of all there is a geopolitical conflict of interest related to the bridge. There is a need for territorial integrity from Croatia and on the other hand there is a claim for a clear sea corridor from Bosnia and Herzegovina. These demands were mutually restrictive. Most of the complaints arrived from the Bosniaks and the pro-Bosnian sides of BiH’s goverments. Sarajevo was completely excluded from the planning and preparation and for that reason they opposed the project from the beginning This article tries to present the case of the Pelješac Bridge from various aspects: history of BiH’s sea corridor, border disputes, the role of ethnopolitics in Bosnia and Herzegovina, interstate relations between the involved states. However, above all else, the main question is which is more important: continuity and integrity of a state or the question of a sea corridor?
