Abstract

Jókai regarded literary works as linguistic creations that can demonstrate the potential of language. Furthermore, he perceived literature as „shibboleth” (a distinguishing mark) which makes national culture recognizable to foreigners. Although Jókai wrote regularly and extensively about literature, he did not leave behind any specific writings on aesthetics. His portraits of writers are strikingly personal, emphasising their artistic character, while his fiction is a continuous self-reflection of literature as language. Jókai’s understanding of his own role as a writer is dominated by a sense of the growing threat posed by the gravitational pull of world languages to the literature of „minor” languages.
