Abstract
A prominent agent of Ottoman expansion in Hungary was the family of Bali Pasha, the second governor of the vilayet of Buda. Bali and his four sons were typical marcher lords (uç beyis) of the Hungarian-Ottoman frontier, who were the engines of conquest and later, after the establishment of the new vilayet, the Porte bestowed upon them the new acquisitions. All of Bali’s sons ruled many subprovinces in Ottoman Hungary and the Balkans. This study deals with the youngest of them, Mehmed, who was called Yahyalu – that is, belonging to the Yahya clan –, sometimes Yahyapasazade or Vusuli by his literary nickname. In addition, the research has shown that the persons mentioned in the obscure description of the formation of the sancak of Kirka by the chronicler Peçevi can be understood and their actors – among them Mehmed bey – can be identified. The study used several of Peçevi’s manuscripts to examine and resolve the archontological data mentioned in the chronicle in a distorted form.
