Abstract
RIFAT CHADIRJI AWARD 2020: COMMENDATION, CAIRO, EGYPT; ARCHITECT: Atelier Aziz Al Qatami The AL Maidan Bridge, awarded an honourable mention for the Rifat Chadirji Prize 2020, envisions a "living bridge" for Cairo that moves beyond mere transit to facilitate non-linear movement across three decks with six programmed "knots" for activities including a football pitch and open-air cinema. Designed to encapsulate Cairo's essence using local plants and sandstone-inspired concrete, the bridge aims to formalize informal social uses of such structures while creating a porous landmark that interacts with the Nile landscape.
