Abstract
1. In an earlier treatise we gave a detailed account of the fact that the sound quality can be measured objectively. (Bolla MFF 13. 1984, 71—120). Starting from the so-called cardinal vowels of IPA we elaborated a phonetic measuring system, the ’sound standard’ consisting of vowel monophtongs of 24 kind to compare the speech sounds. We determined the articulative positions and sounding values adequate to these by phonetic analyses and syntheses. To apply the experimental results in practice we established a method by computer presenting the vowels of the sound standard, first by PDP 11/34 computer and OVE III/c speech synthesizer, then Commodore 64 personal computer. 2. The task was to present the vowels of the sound standard in an easily comprehensible form by visual and auditive sensation with a program easy to manage and to form a firm visual and auditive memory in the user by repetition according to need. 3. Our program named Daniel Jones renders the following demonstration possible, which is contained in the so-called menu of the program. 1. The presentation of the sound system in tables (see Fig. 5) 2. The sounding of the sounds, writing of the phonetic sign to the screen (see Fig. 4) 3. The drawing of the X-ray schemes of the sounds (see Fig. 7) 4. The drawing of the X-ray scheme and the sounding of the sound (see Fig. 6) 5. The printing of the figures seen on the screen 6. The termination of the operation by the program, the „switching o f f ’ the program 4. The technical means seen in Fig. 1 constitue the hardware of the presentation. 5. The phonetic basis consists of two parts: a) the co-ordinate data necessary to the drawing of X-ray scheme of 24 vowels (see Fig. 2) and b) the acoustic parameters necessary for the artificial production of sounds. 6. The process figure of the program named Daniel Jones is shown in the Fig. 3. 7. In the further part of the study we make known the menu from 1 to 6. The program is suitable for presenting the sound system of other languages. In such a case the articulative data, acoustic parameters and phonetic signs are to be substituted for the data of the given language.
