Abstract

The author dedicated a standalone monograph to János Vitéz of Kiskálló, in which he presented the trajectory of his career. Even in that earlier work, he noted that, with the continued uncovering of primary sources, it would likely become possible to supplement the available biographical data. The present study addresses an episode from 1530 involving János Vitéz in his capacity as royal captain in Máramaros County — a so-called “adventure” that, due to a lack of documentation, was only briefly mentioned in the previously published volume. Drawing on a newly discovered source — entitled Register of monies due to His Royal Majesty and handed over to János Vitéz of Kiskálló at various times in the counties of Bereg and Máramaros — it has been possible to reconstruct Vitéz’s activities in the region. Acting on the orders of King John, in the first half of 1530 he confiscated and secured for Tamás Nádasdy the estates and revenues in Bereg and Máramaros Counties that had previously been held by the Ártándi brothers. Furthermore, he undertook a diplomatic mission to Transylvania in connection with matters concerning certain castles. The appendix to the present study includes the full text of the original source.
