Abstract
In my study, I present the naming motives of the team names of the Katedra History Competition, which is part of the Katedra group, based on naming motives and semantic analysis. The corpus under study consists of the naming material of 10 years of the competition: 314 team names created by the 416 teams participating in the competition (I count the repeated team names only once). Part of the naming material reveals the nature and themes of the competition, and part reveals the personal attachments of the team members. As with the nicknames, some of the names refer to a characteristic of the person bearing the name, but unlike the nicknames, the names were not given to the team members from outside, but were given by the team members themselves. The age-specific nature of the team names also gives rise to a tendency towards linguistic playfulness and humour. The team names of the competition are extremely varied, and the motivation for group naming is often multifaceted.
