Abstract

A tanulmány Grendel Lajos életművének és a csehszlovákiai normalizációnak a kapcsolatát vizsgálja. Először életrajzi vonatkozásokat tár fel, Grendel és a reformkommunizmus, illetve az 1968-as okkupáció, majd a normalizáció korszakának viszonyát az interjúk és a 2025-ben megjelent Önéletrajzi töredékek tükrében. A tanulmány Grendel legtöbb nyelvre fordított regényét, az Einstein harangjait vizsgálja közelebbről e viszonylatban, a regény magyar és szlovák recepciója felől indulva. A regény középszerű hősének élete olyan antibildung-narratívát képez, amely a szocialista ideál paródiája. Mészáros munkahelye, a különös kutatóintézet pedig a kafkai hivataltoposz sajátos alkalmazásaként a rendszer és a rendszerváltás szatirikus allegóriájaként értelmezhető. Végül a rendszerkritika nyelvi eszközeit és a hipernormalizált nyelv megjelenítését vizsgálja. | The present study examines the relationship between Lajos Grendel’s oeuvre and the Czechoslovak normalisation. It begins by exploring biographical contexts, considering Grendel’s attitudes towards reform communism, the 1968 occupation, and the subsequent normalisation era, as reflected in his interviews and the posthumously published Önéletrajzi töredékek (Autobiographical Fragments) of 2025.The analysis then focuses more closely on Grendel’s most widely translated novel, Einstein harangjai (The Bells of Einstein), approaching it through the lens of its Hungarian and Slovak reception. The life of the novel’s mediocre protagonist constitutes an anti-Bildung narrative that functions as a parody of socialist ideals. Meanwhile, the protagonist’s workplace – the obscure research institute – may be read as a distinctive adaptation of the Kafkaesque bureaucratic topos, serving as a satirical allegory of both the regime itself and the process of regime change. Finally, the study investigates the linguistic instruments of regime critique deployed in the text, along with its representation of hypernormalised language.
