Abstract
The study provides an overview of the history of the Jewish communities in Sardinia, with special emphasis on Hungarian connections and individual biographies related to the Holocaust. It first examines the early documented presence of Jews in Cagliari and Alghero, followed by the transformations caused by the 1492 expulsion and the limited reappearance of Jewish life in the modern era. Through the life stories of Ernő Egri Erbstein, Miklós Deutsch and Edith Bruck, the author illuminates the unexpected intersections between Hungarian and Sardinian history in the twentieth century. The research demonstrates how Holocaust events affected individuals linked to Sardinia, even though the island itself remained free from deportations. By analysing microhistorical narratives and newly uncovered family documents, the study highlights the transnational dimension of Holocaust memory, particularly between Hungary and Sardinia. These findings contribute to the development of a local–international framework for understanding the Holocaust’s historical impact.
