Abstract
This study analyses the memory of the Drancy internment camp and the long process that led to the establishment of the present-day museum and memorial. It examines how the site’s function evolved after World War II and how French society gradually confronted the history associated with Drancy. The author highlights the roles of survivor associations, religious actors, local authorities, and later the Paris Shoah Memorial in shaping historical remembrance. A major turning point occurred in the 1970s, when the specific experience of Jewish victims began to receive focused attention. The memorial’s current educational programmes and exhibition strategies demonstrate that the remembrance of Drancy is not merely a local or national concern but part of a broader European context. The study concludes that the modern museum emerged from a long trajectory shaped by debates, political tensions, and evolving understandings of Holocaust memory.
