Abstract

A bécsi kormányzat 1868-ban expedíciót indított Kelet-Ázsiába, hogy más nyugati országok mintájára kereskedelmi és diplomáciai szerződést kössön az ottani három szuverén országgal, Kínával, Japánnal és Sziámmal. A kiegyezésben lefektetett elveknek megfelelően az expedíciónak Magyarország is részesévé vált, és a Magyar Tudományos Akadémia fellépése nyomán a magyar kormány tudományos célokra is felhasználta az expedíciót. Ennek jegyében rendelte az expedícióhoz Eötvös József kultuszminiszter Xántus Jánost, hogy természetrajzi, ún. népismei és könyvészeti gyűjtést végezzen a hazai tudományos intézetek, mindenekelőtt a Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum javára. Az amerikai emigrációja során tapasztalt gyűjtővé vált Xántus több mint 155 000 objektummal tért haza Kelet-Ázsiából. Ebből a gyűjteményből született meg a Néprajzi és az Iparművészeti Múzeum, és gyarapodtak óriási mértékben a Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum természettudományos gyűjteményei. | In 1868, the Austrian government launched an expedition to East Asia, aiming to conclude trade and diplomatic agreements with the three sovereign states of China, Japan, and Siam, following in the footsteps of other Western countries. In accordance with the principles set out in the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867, Hungary also became a party to the expedition, and following the request of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, the Hungarian government also used the expedition for scientific purposes. To this end, Minister of Culture József Eötvös commissioned János Xántus to join the expedition and collect natural history, ethnographic, and bibliographic materials for the benefit of Hungarian scientific institutions, primarily the Hungarian National Museum. Having become an experienced collector during his time as an émigré in the United States, Xántus returned home from East Asia with more than 155,000 objects. This collection led to the establishment of the Museum of Ethnography and the Museum of Applied Arts, and greatly enriched the natural science collections of the Hungarian National Museum.
