Abstract

This paper presents the history, institutional development, and current status of applied linguistics at the University of Pannonia in Veszprém, Hungary. The study outlines the establishment of teacher training and applied linguistics education after the political transition of the early 1990s, highlighting the role of key scholars and the creation of one of Hungary’s earliest applied linguistics departments. The paper also demonstrates how the program gradually evolved from a supplementary specialization into a fully developed MA program and later into an internationally oriented academic and research centre. The article discusses the contribution of prominent Hungarian linguists and researchers who shaped the intellectual profile of the Veszprém workshop in fields of psycholinguistics, sociolinguistics, child language, language policy, translation studies, and computational linguistics. Particular attention is devoted to the work of Zsolt Lengyel, whose leadership established the foundations of applied linguistics education in Veszprém and influenced several generations of students and researchers. The study further examines the effects of the Bologna educational reforms and demographic changes on student enrolment and institutional sustainability. Although the number of Hungarian students gradually decreased during the 2010s, the internationalisation of higher education opened new opportunities for the program. Through participation in the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship program and the expansion of English-language instruction, the MA program attracted international students from a wide range of linguistic and cultural backgrounds. The paper also introduces the Multilingualism Doctoral School, which provides an academic continuation route for graduates of the Applied Linguistics MA program. The doctoral school has become an important research centre for multilingualism, bilingualism, psycholinguistics, intercultural communication, and language education. In addition to teaching and research activities, the article highlights the role of professional public engagement, including conferences, journals, language examinations, and inter-university collaborations that contributed to strengthening the professional identity of applied linguistics in Hungary. Finally, the study reflects on the broader significance of the Veszprém applied linguistics workshop within Hungarian higher education. Despite financial, demographic, and institutional challenges, the program has maintained its academic profile through innovation, international cooperation, and a strong commitment to multilingualism research. The paper argues that the history of applied linguistics in Veszprém illustrates how smaller academic centres can play a significant role in the development of national and international linguistic scholarship.
