Abstract

The chapter examines the role of a Vienna-based performer, Ludwig Döbler, in introducing the visual technology of the dissolving views to audiences of continental Europe in the early 1840s. Referring to a specific lantern genre, dissolving views enabled the projection of transformative images and soon became popular forms of nineteenth century entertainment. Started off as a charismatic and acknowledged magician in the 1820s, Döbler performed successful productions, including magic tricks, wonders of vision, and spectacular media presentations, on various prominent stages of Europe. In 1843, he premiered his first optical show of dissolving views and continued with an extensive continental tour, which contributed to the new genre being shared across borders. The chapter argues that Döbler’s influence was most significant during the productions at the Hungarian and German public theatres of Pest-Buda, a city of heated political debates and emancipatory movements. Two local performers, György Telepi and Imre Róth, were inspired by the Austrian performer’s outstanding shows, and from 1844, they became transcultural mediators of the technology themselves. Consequently, Telepi and Róth assisted the further travel of the dissolving views to the eastern parts of the Austrian Empire, and even to the Ottoman Empire. The interconnected histories of the three performers above calls attention to the relevance of Central and Eastern European popular performance cultures and itinerant performers in circulating new visual apparatuses, perceptual experience, and scientific findings in the nineteenth century among various ethnic and social communities of the continent and beyond.
