Abstract

The author began exploring the archaeological sites of Barcs and its surrounding area in the mid-1970s. This work was of pioneering importance, as research of this nature and depth had not been carried out in this area before. In 1987, the scattered material collected during the visits was transferred to the Dráva Museum in Barcs (today the Dráva Museum of Public Interest). The value of the collection – in addition to its topographical importance – was also enhanced by the fact that it also included eras that were not or barely known from Somogy County. For this study, the following, 14–17th century focused on sites with (also) the location of former settlements: Barcs-Vukovári field, Barcs-Pusztabarcs, Barcs-Szelistye, Barcs-Szili-tanya, Barcs-Drávaszentes-Kenderföld, Barcs-Somogytarnóca-Kistarnóca, Barcs-Somogytarnóca-Alsógyörgyös, Komlósd-Szőlőhegy. The presented 13/14–17th century sites are important elements of the medieval settlement network in the area, and their finds significantly help to learn about the characteristics of late medieval and early modern pottery in the Dráva countryside, a topic that has barely been explored in Hungarian ceramics research.
