Abstract

Examining the press conditions in Kaposvár during the first two decades of the twentieth century, clashes and battles often turned personal on the pages of the local newspapers, which, according to differing political views, appeared in a harsh and insulting tone. A good example of this is the irreconcilable opposition between the „Kaposvári Hírlap” and the „Somogyvármegye”, later between the „Somogyvármegye” and the „Somogyi Napló”, or the writings highlighted by Ferenc Göndör aimed at discrediting Németh István, the city’s mayor who has now become iconic. Previous research exploring local press relations only dealt with the relationships between the daily newspapers and Ferenc Göndör’s work in Kaposvár from 1905 to 1912 on a mere mention level, moreover providing numerous incorrect data. The next phase of his life and journalistic work, his eventful and contradictory engagement, and then his personal statements intended to explain these, are discussed more extensively by posterity, but from opposing viewpoints, sometimes burdened with extreme evaluations. Our goal is to change this situation.
