Abstract
The article analyses the 1997 British general election as a critical juncture that produced Labour dominance while accelerating the long-term pluralisation of party competition. It examines New Labour, electoral disproportionality, devolution, European Parliament elections, and the widening gap between voter preferences and Westminster representation.
