Abstract
The Irish Homestead was one of the most vibrant and thoughtful newspapers of the early twentieth century. It was the official organ of the Irish Co-operative Movement, founded by Sir Horace Plunkett in 1895 under the auspices of the Irish Agricultural Organisation Society. In its early years, the Jesuit priest, Fr. Thomas Finlay, edited the newspaper, followed by Harry F. Norman and Thomas Patrick Gill, the Irish Parliamentary Party Member of Parliament. The painter, poet and theosophist, George Russell (AE), took over editorship in 1905, with poet and writer, Susan Langstaff Mitchell, acting as assistant editor. This article considers the ideas of the Co-operative Movement in editorials of The Irish Homestead discussing capitalist and socialist economic principles and practices. I look at proposals for economic development in rural Ireland that the newspaper advocated in terms of capitalist financial improvement and tendencies towards socialist or part-socialist economics of co-operative endeavor. The article also addresses a persistent concern with idealism and pragmatism in The Irish Homestead, evident in the space it devoted to Standish O’Grady’s idea of a rural Irish experimental utopian community. Finally, I discuss the case that The Irish Homestead made for a separation of economic from political nationalism in Ireland in its effort to promote and sustain the Co-operative Movement as one that drew its membership from both Irish nationalist and Irish unionist quarters.
