Abstract

This article will discuss how family relations, and children are represented in Irish drama films, mainly focusing on The Quiet Girl (An Cailín Ciúin) (2022), which will be compared to, and analyzed in relation to some Irish short films like Dance Lexie Dance (1996), Rúbaí (2013), and Boogaloo and Graham (2014). The research begins by placing the representations of Irish children, and their families into a historical context, and how certain events in Ireland have influenced, and shaped the changes of their portrayals. With all films being made during or after the Celtic Tiger period, the changes post-Celtic Tiger films introduced to the portrayal of Irish families, and hildren, and what traditional components, and archetypal elements remained, will be investigated. When it comes to the characters of the children who appear in the chosen films, the center of attention in this paper will be on how they act within their domestic environment, and how their family setting impacts them. Their financial situations, their ways of living, and how the parents’ conduct influences the behavior of the children within the stories will be analyzed. It will also be discussed how the cinematography – camera positions, lighting and spaces – is used to emphasize and support the child’s feelings in The Quiet Girl. This article is a rewritten version of a BA thesis written in 2024.
