Abstract

In the 1720s, the debate about Wood’s halfpence – a royal patent authorizing William Wood to mint copper coinage for Ireland – between the British government and the Irish was just the tip of the iceberg, signaling broader tensions. From the declarations signed by merchants, tailors, and weavers in Dublin in 1724 to the newspaper notices for editions of Dean Swift’s Miscellanies in 1735 and 1736, early newspaper responses to Swift’s pamphlets are essential to understanding their reception history. Equally important might be the political reaction to them two centuries later in Hungary. By examining summaries and critical approaches to Swift’s Drapier’s Letters, I aim to demonstrate how his pamphlets were received in Hungary during the 1950s, as reflected in contemporary newspapers and book reviews.
