Abstract

Recent historical scholarship has seen an increased interest in Turkic narrative sources coming from the successor-states of the Golden Horde, which also includes the chronicle ʿUmdetü l-aḫbār ‘Essence of Histories’ by the Crimean author ʿAbdulġaffār Ḳırımī. Particular significance lies in the chapters about the history of the Golden Horde and of the Crimean Khanate, the text of which has been published by ʿĀṣım (ʿAbdulġaffār/ʿĀṣım 1343 [1924/25]), and recently Derin Paşaoğlu (Abdulgaffar/Derin Pashaoglu 2014), followed by a translation into Russian (Abdulgaffar/Karimova and Mirgaleev 2018), which has been expanded on by numerous other studies. In addition, there has been scholarly attention to the biography of the author. The most notable recent studies are those of Kellner-Heinkele (1998; 2001) and Seytyag’yaev (2013). The present article focuses on the genealogy of ʿAbdulġaffār and will show how this text contributes to our knowledge and understanding of the institutions of tutors ( atalıḳ ) and foster-brotherhood ( ėmildeş ) in the Crimean Khanate.
