Abstract

In the recent decades, according to the priorities of the European Union urban policies, several public spaces had been renovated. These processes were controversial, thus resulted several different public spaces with wide ranges of features which are hard to examine or compare. The paper’s aim is to introduce a public space usage measuring method in Hungary, to provide comparison possibility to the urban rehabilitation process monitoring. The question of the paper was to study the public space usage in Szeged through two examples (Aradi square and Kálvária square), along five dimensions, namely, physical configuration, activities-animation, control, civility, ownership. To evaluate and measure the “value” of these public spaces questionnaire was conducted with 150 -150 public space users in three different dates, and weekly field survey was made. As a result, we can prove that both of the examined public spaces are easy-to-achieve, but there are huge differences in their measured values. The Aradi square has better position within the city, it is vivid and well maintained, but with lack of animation and facultative activity and lower value of civility. The Kálvária square is suffering from vandalism therefore its physical configuration is not rational and due to safety issues it is mainly used for basic activities, walking, but not tempting for longer activities and multifunctional purposes.
