Abstract
Film Propaganda in Francisco Franco’s Spain. This article aims to demonstrate how the Spanish Francoist dictatorship (1939–1975) exploited audiovisual media for propaganda purposes, with a particular focus on the NO-DO newsreel and feature films. While international research primarily examines the film policy of the Spanish dictatorship from institutional or historical perspectives, such as censorship, it pays less attention to systematically analysing the ideological motifs that appear in films. This study primarily relies on audiovisual sources and related literature to interpret films as historical sources that reflect the regime’s self-image, as well as propaganda products. The analysis explores the cinematic representation of fundamental Francoist ideological elements and highlights how motion pictures contributed to the formation of national identity, the image of the enemy and the cult of the dictator.
