Abstract

Discourse markers which have arisen from quotative constructions are a well-studied topic. This article presents the grammaticalization of the Hungarian converb mondván ‘saying’ from the first written records of it up to the present day. Its original role as an element of serial verb constructions in quotative structures is described. The word turned into a quotative marker which signalled the beginning of a quote. Then its use extended to indirect quotes, which served as a source for further processes (reanalysis and inference fixing). In contemporary language use, a new role of mondván has emerged: as a discourse marker it in dicates indirect causation and functions as a connective element.
