Abstract

In Standard Udmurt, [w] occurs only in about 50 stems, always following stem-initial [k] and preceding [ɑ] as in the word [kwɑc] ‘6’, with one exception, [kwiɲ] ‘3’, in which it is followed by [i]. Some grammars analyse [w] as a realisation of the approximant /w/, while others analyse it as an initial part of a diphthong (/u̯ɑ/ and /u̯i/). Other possible analyses, such as the assumption of a labialised velar stop /kw/ or the analysis of [w] as an allophone of an already supposed phoneme do not appear in the literature. This paper observes the pros and cons of the different analyses, including data from and observations about the dialects. It concludes that the segment [w] belongs to a phoneme which is marginal, but it remains unclear to what phoneme it belongs.
