Abstract

In our study, the influencing factors of research productivity was examined among academics in five higher education institutions in CEE. Our main research question was which work-related stressors and resources reduce or contribute to their research productivity. The theoretical background of our research is based on the theory of job demands and resources (JD-R), which helps to explain and understand the relationship between job characteristics and employee productivity. For our research we used the CEETHE 2023 database (N=821). The data were collected from higher education institutions in two disadvantaged regions of Hungary, while for institutions across the border in Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania and Serbia, we targeted Hungarian minority institutions. Our results suggested that the most productive groups were older people, men in higher positions, those with an academic degree, those working in social and economic sciences, and senior academics. Stress caused by performance appraisal emerged as a negative factor for productivity.
