Abstract
This study presents the results of an ongoing collaboration to identify the vibration modes of drone propulsion systems (motor and rotor) using optical techniques. The research consortium first applied Phase-Based Motion Magnification (PBMM) and Digital Image Correlation (DIC) methods to investigate a stationary drone propulsion system subjected to rectilinear excitation via an electrodynamic shaker and torsional excitation via the propulsion system's brushless DC motor. The resulting vibration mode identification and classification have provided a baseline for the untensioned, non-rotating condition. Next, the PBMM and DIC methods have been applied to the same system while rotating. Both PBMM and DIC have constraints that make their application to rotating specimens difficult, with the experimental setup posing additional challenges. The paper presents the applied measurement methodologies and discusses the challenges, advantages, and disadvantages of each.
