Abstract

Future consciousness has become an increasingly important educa-tional objective, yet relatively few educational board games explicitly support adolescents in reflecting on their future in Hungary. This paper presents the ex-ploratory phase of an ongoing project aimed at developing an educational board game for fostering future consciousness among secondary school students. Ra-ther than beginning with predefined game mechanics, the project first investi-gates how students communicate, reflect, and engage with future-related topics through a series of exploratory workshops. The workshops were conducted with secondary school students from three secondary schools located in the disadvan-taged eastern region of our country (N=85). The workshops employ multiple methods, including Dixit cards, meme cards, life wheel activities, mind mapping, collaborative discussions, structured observations, and reflective field notes. The collected data are analysed to identify communication patterns, motivational characteristics, and interaction strategies that can inform educational game de-sign. Preliminary findings indicate that visual, narrative, and collaborative activ-ities generate higher levels of engagement. These insights are currently informing the conceptual design of the board game. As a Work-in-Progress paper, it aims to stimulate discussion on evidence-based educational game development and seeks feedback on the proposed design framework and the planned evaluation strategy.
