Abstract

Drawing on an interdisciplinary literature review, this paper examines the pastoral significance of transgenerational heritage in dialogue with the biblical concept of inheritance. While transgenerational research primarily investigates the transmission of patterns, trauma, beliefs, and resources, the biblical understanding of inheritance offers a broader theological framework. The study first outlines the principal mechanisms of transgenerational transmission and highlights the role of inheritance within family systems. It then examines the biblical concept of inheritance in both the Old and New Testaments, demonstrating that it extends beyond material and familial transmission to emphasize its covenantal, eschatological, and Christ-centered dimensions. By comparing these two perspectives, the paper argues that pastoral care is enriched by integrating insights from transgenerational research with theological anthropology. Although Christian individuals are shaped by their transgenerational inheritance, their identity is ultimately grounded in God’s promise and the inheritance received through Christ. This perspective enables the reframing of personal and family narratives within the theological horizon of God’s promised inheritance, thereby providing a transformative resource for pastoral caregiving.
