Abstract

János Bauko, Hungarian Onomastics in countries neighbouring Hungary The paper presents onomastic research projects carried out in the regions of the Carpathian Basin outside the borders of Hungary which have Hungarian populations. The first section of the paper enumerates papers, bibliographies surveying contemporary Hungarian Onomastics in countries neighbouring Hungary. The second section discusses monographs, publications and papers published recently in the relevant countries, which are examined in the order of the proportion of the Hungarian population living there (Romania, Slovakia, Serbia, Ukraine, Croatia, Austria, Slovenia). This section mainly deals with publications on personal names, place names and some unspecified types of proper names, paying attention to the (sub)types of the observed names, the authors of the works concerned and the chronology of their publication. The third section focuses on the tasks of Hungarian Onomastics in these countries, and emphasizes the importance of onomastic education. The author also highlights the relevance of properly exploring such areas of research as the relations between bilingualism and name use; name contacts; differences, similarities and interference noticeable in minority–majority name use. It is desirable that onomastic scholars cooperate closely with one another and with scholars of other disciplines. It is also essential that onomasticians take part in the standardization and name planning processes affecting the use of minority personal, place and institutional names; and also in the work of decision-making bodies dealing with such questions. The bibliography at the end of the paper includes 284 references, including the addresses of several relevant onomastic websites.
