Abstract
The main goal of this brief contribution is to account for the etymology of Written Manchu akjan ‘thunder’. This word is an exception to the so-called “First Palatalisation” (Proto-Tunguic *TyV > Jurchen †C), since it appears in Late Jurchen as †a[k]dyan. Additionally, some interesting clues regarding the internal classification of the Tungusic languages, derived from the proposal of the First and Second Palatalisations, shall be commented upon.
