Abstract
The titles of dictionaries, especially those of the last decades, being the essential components of the text, inform us not only about the subject of description and the means of presentation, but also about the addressee. The direction for the addressee determines many components in the titles of dictionaries with the aim of convincing the users in the exceptional qualities of the publication. This determines the place of such frequent lexemes as new, newest, big, contemporary, up- to-date, complete. Psycholinguistic studies of the “ im age of dictionaries” in the commonplace mind and also the questioning of students, pupils, teachers, librarians show that the steady ideas of native speakers about the “ideal dictionary” are taken into account both by the compilers and the publishers. It appears that in the contemporary dictionary matter the commercial component is essential and it determines also the frequent exploitation of the names of famous lexicographers.
