Abstract
This paper intends to give a detailed account of Zsigmond Telegdi’s life and scientific activities. In respect of the former, the sources quoted include his personal papers, bequeathed to us from his Nachlass , which help enlighten the events of his career. As for the latter, his main fields of research, i.e., the history of linguistic thought and Persian linguistics, are discussed. This includes the descriptive problems of Classical and Modern Persian (occasionally Tajik as well) and the historical development of New Persian. The paper attempts to demonstrate the interactions between data-based studies of Persian and theoretical investigations (e.g., into the nature of word classes or compounds of Indo-European types) in Telegdi’s linguistic thought.
