Abstract
Among the ancient Roman building remains in Hungary, the villa in Baláca deserves a very prestigious rank. Beyond its archaeological values, the villa can be considered a remarkable monument also for the circumstances and time of the discovery of the ruins – that is from a research- and scientific historical point of view –, in terms of settlement history and history of architecture, due to the wide variety of structures used, and last but not least for the richness of the artworks found here. The basic principle of the central building’s historic restoration was given: if the aim was to provide a long standing and timeless protection for the architectural details that came to light again, to re-lay the mosaics previously moved to different places back to the spots where they came from, and to restore wall painting reconstructions to their original architectonic connections – then the building remains must be completely covered. As the task to be resolved, the focus of the plans was on the spatial delimitation of the central space and on the coverage of the cloister and the room tracts. Stone and yellow glass sections alternate at the outer spatial boundary of the building. In the line of the common wall of the rooms and the cloister, however, only pillars were required for supporting the load-bearing beams. This way, projected to a floor plan view, only 1/5th of the walls was built again. The protective building designed by the architect-archaeologist Gyula Hajnóczi (1920-1996), which was raised three and a half decades ago on the border of Nemesvámos to cover the ruins of the Roman villa in Baláca, has become a timeless solution. It is timely both in its theoretical considerations and practical decisions. It is a correct solution in consistently following the monument preservation principles and appropriate in its specific design-methodological aspects. As for the evolutionary history of the architect’s oeuvre, the design has a summarizing approach, but also has a unique vision coming from the analysis of the concrete situation. This architectural piece of work is partially repetitive and working with trained movements, but confidently chooses from the range of expanding possibilities of the given era. It is characterized by an internationally recognized archeological preparedness, an architectural creativity of high-quality aesthetics, and a complex vision of masterful elegance. As a result, a timeless construction can be found in Balácapuszta: a form citation inspired by the excavated fragments of an ancient Roman building. Even if its physical manifestation is not so durable.
