Abstract
Buildings carrying the cultural traditions of our country, towns and villages, and – as prominent treasures of the environment – defining their images and framing our historical and national identity are part of the irreplaceable heritage of our nation’s history, culture and art. These constructions as monuments – regardless of their ownership – are shared cultural treasures of the whole nation, and there is a need for national cooperation to protect them. It is a public interest to ensure their maintenance and appropriate use, and to make them accessible to the whole society. As it has been recognized that the tendency of revaluating the traditions of the past has become stronger all over the world in the last few years, the careful maintenance and sustainable development of the constructed heritage became an important strategic issue and gained financial support from several sources. It is not only important from the perspective of the touristic sector to promote the role of the built environment in passing on traditions, but our monuments – always representing their own era – are also important elements of our nation’s identity. During its history, a monument’s value is increased by non-material factors which can also be characterized and evaluated. This social value – similarly to the material value – increases with the age of the monument and with the number of its modifications. The sustainable maintenance of a historical monument represents the caring behaviour of a new age. Renovations have significant social importance as besides their function as touristic sights with attached services, these sites also contribute to the promotion of gastronomy and arts education, and to the strengthening of individuals’ bonds with the general Central-European culture. The communication of these values, the exploration of the related national values and their positioning in the history of European Culture enhance continuous learning at different ages, local and regional cultural identity and relationships within society and among nations. The aim of the sustainable development of the built environment, more specifically the renovation of monuments, is to create usable buildings available for certain functions. It is not acceptable to preserve and maintain a monument for its own sake only to keep its historical or aesthetic values. The architectural heritage – with its historical and contemporary elements – plays an important role in our quality of life: starting from our attachment to our history, through its modern use, it also represents our faith in the future. In addition to the beauty of the sites, their psychological effect is also significant: besides shaping the self-image of our society, they also influence its physical well-being.
