Abstract
The analysis explores the pooled data file from four surveys on the ISSP Inequality module (1987, 1992, 1999, 2009). We find the direct effect of social origin to be persistent on occupational status as well as on earnings. The effect of social origin varies by level of education. For the effect of social origin over time, there is no difference in Hungary for social status, while the impact of social origin on earnings increases under the post-communist times. There is no significant change in the effect of education on respondent’s occupation over time.
