Abstract
The book by Daniel Polakovič, Iva Steinová, and Petra Vladařová presents the history of the Jewish cemeteries in southern Bohemia. All three authors are expert researchers on the topic. This 383-page volume with rich photographic material contains an encyclopedic presentation of the region’s 43 Jewish cemeteries. The individual chapters describe the beginnings of the settlements of the Jews in the region and the time and the events concerning the foundation of their cemeteries examining in detail the formal characteristics of the earliest tombstones, the ones of the most well-known families, as well as some of the most outstanding tombstones from recent times. Through the synthesis of written and visual material, the authors convincingly demonstrate the complex heritage and source value of the cemeteries. The appendices can especially serve as a useful source for further research: they provide the list of community functionaries identified in the cemetery and indicate the stonemasons. The volume contributes significantly to the research conducted on the histories of Jewish cemeteries in Hungary as well, providing valuable insight into the types of Jewish tombstones of Hungary from the 18th–19th century.
