Abstract

To examine the relationship between the sensitivity to ACh and membrane potential of giant neurones an electrical arrangement was made, which allowed the exact measurement of the polarizing voltage. By the means of this arrangement the ACh equilibrium potential of neurones belonging to different pharmacological categories was measured. In the case of some identified neurones being unclassifiable either as D or H cells because of their variable reaction given to ACh the resting membrane potential was found to be extremely near to EACh. In contrast to this, the typical D and H cells show an EACh significantly differing from the value of their own resting potential. On the basis of results a possible explanation of the special behaviour of cells showing variable reaction is given.
