Abstract
In recent global emergencies, the importance of reliable networks and the necessity of disaster preparedness have been further emphasized. Due to the interdependence of critical infrastructures such as electrical and communication networks, the interplay of networks must be taken into account when examining and designing them. In this study, we investigate the resilience of interdependent energy and communication networks against disasters. Through simulations conducted with real-world networks and earthquake data, we show the extent to which network interdependencies degrade resilience against disasters. Furthermore, we demonstrate that by managing interdependencies between networks and selecting tolerance thresholds, vulnerability to disasters can be significantly reduced to a fraction of its original level.
