Abstract
The effect of temporary simultaneous occlusion of the two common carotid and the two vertebral arteries has been studied in dogs. In agreement with the literature, it was found that the circulation of the head was reduced by not more than 50 per cent. Occlusion for 30 minutes gave rise to a shock-like state which was reversible so that all animals survived the first 48 hrs. The shock became irreversible after occlusion for 55 minutes: the m ajority of the animals died within 24, the rest within 48 hours. The observed irreversibility cannot be ascribed to the temporary reduction of the cerebral blood flow alone; it is presumably the result of this reduction combined with other factors which, in themselves, are not fatal, e.g. protracted anaesthesia, major surgery, loss of blood.
