Abstract
This article presents a previously unpublished Russian source on the history of the Battle of Debrecen, one of the clashes between Russian and Hungarian revolutionary forces in 1849, which took place on August 2. Lieutenant General Vladimir Grigorevich Glazenap commanded a cavalry division on the Russian right flank and was accused after the battle of failing to attack the retreating Hungarian troops in a timely manner and complete their defeat. Glazenap responded to these accusations with a note (a letter defending himself) in French, indicating that at the beginning of the battle, he had initiated the deployment of his division himself, but his immediate superior, Lieutenant General Kupriyanov, had “brushed him off,” and that the commander-in-chief, General Ivan Fedorovich Paskevich, simply forgot not only about his division but about the entire Russian right flank. This incident clearly demonstrates the rigid command structure of the Russian army, which did not allow for flexible responses to developments on the battlefield.
