Abstract
For many people, the name János Péter (1910–1999) brings to mind a life full of twists and turns, but perhaps most people have a negative view of him. Although there are those who consider his work as Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Hungarian People’s Republic (1961–1973) to be outstanding, many are critical of his work, especially in the Church. In particular, they find it objectionable that the Reformed pastor, who held the bishopric of the Transtibiscan Reformed Church District between 1949 and 1956, was a clear supporter of the party-state establishment as foreign minister and vice-president of the National Assembly. In this article we focus on the early turning points in János Péter’s career, including his pastoral activities, his early interest in church press and media, and his foreign service in the Reformed Universal Convention.
