Abstract

This paper aims to interpret the period between 1958 and 1967 from the perspective of Holocaust remembrance in the Hungarian socialist public sphere. The thesis of the research is that during this period there was a quantitative and qualitative change in the memory of the Holocaust, that the Antifascist memory order and Jewish memory intersected, that Jewish memory was shaped by po litical implications in a negotiated situation, and that the impact of the events of 1967 must be reckoned with. The research explores the effects of the Claims Conference’s cultural reconstruction program of 1958 (exhibitions, historical work, publication of memorials), reveals how Eichmann’s arrest and trial, and the Frankfurt trials, provided legitimacy for the wave of reevaluation of the past in the 1960s also provides examples of the cultural agenda of institutional anti fascist ideology. The research employs a discourse analysis approach to examine instances of political and ideological divergence and intersection between Jewish and antifascist memory discourses, and, in an attempt to re-canonize, to uncover significant memory texts that have been passively forgotten in archives, including Dawid Rubinowicz’s Diary, the Rebellion against the Ghetto [Fellázad a gettó] with shocking translations, Gáborné Vidor’s Auschwitz memoir, András Mezei’s poems and novels, Boris Palotai’s popular fiction or Erzsi Szenes’s works.
