Abstract

The various abiotic stresses induce oxidative stress because of generation of reactive oxygen species. Consequently, disturbance in metabolism leads to reduce the growth and development of plants. The level of ROS is regulated by different elements of the antioxidant system such as thioredoxins (TRXs) - peroxiredoxins (PRXs). TRXs serve as electron donors for the PRXs through complex formation during this process. The TRX-PRX system shows involvement in both direct and indirect control of the redox environment. It removes the excess of H2O2 and organic peroxides and can activate several protective mechanisms through its participation in redox sensing and signaling. TRXs and PRXs can control several redox-responsive regulatory and enzyme proteins through their post-translational modifications. Although several such regulatory processes have been described, further studies are necessary to understand the role of TRX-PRX system in subcellular modulation of redox environment.
