Abstract

D’Azeglio (1798–1866) attraverso le sue opere contribuì alla formazione dell’identità nazionale italiana nel Risorgimento. Questo lavoro si propone di esaminare il mutamento delle prospettive di d’Azeglio sull’Unità nelle diverse fasi dell’attività letteraria. Tra il 1829–30 e il 1844–45 scrisse romanzi storici (Ettore Fieramosca (1833), Niccolò de’ Lapi (1841)) in cui rappresenta il valore della fratellanza. Dal 1845, in molti pamphlets, si occupò dei problemi istituzionali, politici e sociali dell’epoca: Degli ultimi casi della Romagna (1846), I lutti di Lombardia (1848), Questioni urgenti (1861). Queste opere dimostrano che l’autore arrivò a considerazioni sempre più negative nei confronti dell’unificazione. Dall’ultima opera, l’autobiografia incompiuta I miei ricordi (1867), si deduce che ritenne che l’unificazione avesse causato soltanto la degradazione dell’Italia. L’evoluzione del pensiero dell’autore relativo al Risorgimento evidenzia la complessità del periodo, inoltre dimostra perché la sua ricezione subì vari mutamenti negli ultimi 150 anni. | Through his works, d’Azeglio (1798–1866) contributed to the formation of Italian national identity in the Risorgimento. This paper aims to examine d’Azeglio’s changing perspectives on Unification in the different stages of his career. Between 1829–30 and 1844–45, he wrote historical novels (Ettore Fieramosca (1833), Niccolò de’ Lapi (1841)) in which he portrayed the value of brotherhood. From 1845, he dealt with the institutional, political and social problems of the Risorgimento in many pamphlets: Degli ultimi casi della Romagna (1846), I lutti di Lombardia (1848), Questioni urgenti (1861). These works show that the author arrived at increasingly negative considerations towards unification. His last work, the incomplete autobiography I miei ricordi (1867), represents that he felt that unification had only caused the degradation of Italy. The evolution of the author’s opinion highlights the complexity of the period and also shows why his reception underwent various changes in the last 150 years.
